I Knew You Were Trouble with a Dulcimer
I've liked Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" for a long time, but the pop hit version never felt right when I tried to sing it. Then somebody told me about the version she performed on her 1989 tour: Dark, intense, troubled, minor-key...begging to be adapted to the dulcimer! So ... this is Sam's version.
Though usually associated with old folk songs and tunes, the mountain dulcimer is a natural instrument for pop and rock music. In fact, I call it a more logical first stringed instrument than guitar -- with fewer strings and (usually) fewer frets, it just seems to me that there ought to be millions of kids wanting to play, if only they realized it was relevant to their music. I do these videos to inspire more people to play and listen to dulcimer music, in diverse, non-traditional styles.

Song written by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, and Shellback. Check out Taylor's 1989 Tour version of this at ua-cam.com/video/Xuz6qOqTVAE/v-deo.html
Technical details: Played on my Rod Matheson 3-string chromatic dulcimer, tuned DAD, played in the key of Dm. I'm running the dulcimer through a Headrush Pedalboard, using a rig that includes a wah-wah, overdrive, chorus, phaser, delay, and reverb. (Some of these are used only during parts of the song.) In addition, right after the wah is an FX loop with a Boss OC-3 to add an octave effect just to the lower strings.

I knew this song five years before John Denver recorded his version of it. Its writer had been a major influence on me when I was first developing as a songwriter - for fun songs like "Making the Best of a Bad Situation," "Doin' the Best I Can with What I Got," and "Lord, Mr. Ford." But also for songs like "Daisy Hill" and (don't laugh) "Biff, the Friendly Purple Bear" that went for the heartst...

Cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” performed live at the Colorado Dulcimer Festival by Sam Edelston, on solo 3-string electric dulcimer. I played it as an instrumental, but used the dulcimer to "sing" the song. If you need lyrics to follow the action, they can be readily found through your favorite search engine. Brain Damage coming from a dulcimer

"Brain Damage," the unfortunately titled song from Pink Floyd's classic album, "Dark Side of the Moon," played on electric 3-string dulcimer by Sam Edelston. When I arrange a song, I always aim to do justice to it. This song is about insanity, and in fact it originally was called "Lunatic," so I allowed this arrangement to bounce off the padded walls, especially in the instrumental break in the...
Jerusalem of Gold - live performance, dulcimer

Jerusalem of Gold, or ירושלים של זהב , performed by Sam Edelston at the wonderful Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series in Morristown, NJ. This is an Israeli popular song that was released in May 1967. Three weeks later, the 6-Day War broke out, Israel captured the parts of the city it didn't already have, and writer Naomi Shemer had cause to add another verse. Pomp and Circumstance - and Dulcimer

It's a ubiquitous graduation march. No, it's a Girl Scout song. No, it's a dulcimer song, by golly! Here's the well-known theme from Pomp and Circumstance March #1 by Sir Edward Elgar, performed on mountain dulcimer by Sam Edelston. Many people know words to this, beginning with, ""My Reindeer Flies Sideways." So far, I haven't found any attribution beyond "Girl Scout song." Elgar's full piece ...

      Thanks! 😀 Because dulcimers are so much more associated with traditional and folk music, people expect them to sound traditional. But, think about it, it's the same kind of strings that a guitar uses, so if you add a pickup, it'll be similar to an electric guitar. It's like when a magician pulls a quarter out of your ear: You don't see it coming, because you don't expect it. 😉🎩

      Cool! One common traditional dulcimer tuning is DAA, where the matched strings are higher than the unmatched string - the opposite of a traditional balalaika tuning like EEA, where the matched strings are lower. Another option for a fun noter is a ballpoint pen, such as a Parker Jotter. Wprks well, and always good for a laugh. 😀

      Thank you so much! I always want to do justice to the song. This song wanted pedals for the Pink Floyd feel, and enough time to breathe, and because of the title, I felt it wanted some extra edginess. Your concept of a double neck with guitar and dulcimer fretboards is intriguing. Thanks for mentioning that. This dulcimer was built by the late Rod Matheson of Washington State, designed in collaboration with Robert Force (well-known performer and author of "In Search of the Wild Dulcimer"). The chromatic fretboard and 3-string peghead are minor customizations he did for me.

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer 3 місяці тому

      Thanks, Andromeda! (And what a cool name!) UA-cam has some great live performance videos of Joni on dulcimer, and typically she's moving a chord shape up and down the fretboard. And it sounds really interesting, even though she's doing something simple. If you look at the other famous performers playing dulcimer (Cyndi Lauper, Dolly Parton, Brian Jones, Bruce Hornsby, even Jimmy Page), they're playing simple chords or melody-over drone. There are good reasons for that, and they sound great. I like to take the dulcimer a little farther, into things like melody over distinct accompaniment, or other guitar-type techniques, or effect pedals. I've come to view having only 3 strings as a doorway to more interesting things.

    • @AndromedaCripps
      @AndromedaCripps 3 місяці тому

      @@ContemporaryDulcimer Thanks for the compliment on my name 😂✨ And that is very interesting! I could definitely tell there was more of a finger-picking-guitar-related melody-and-accompaniment technique used in this song (and of course the pedals). I still can’t see the instrument as a solo instrument, but you’ve managed to make it so far more than one would traditionally expect of 3 strings. I think this with a mere bass and drums would be a complete band, the way you play it. That makes me think…. I wonder what capabilities there could be for jazz dulcimer??? Moving chord shaping around the frets is already a big part of jazz guitar technique, and the way you play the instrument gives it more authority over other elements of music like a piano or guitar would have in a 3-piece rhythm section jazz combo. With the right effects, I think it could sound great!

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer 3 місяці тому

      Though I did this video with a flatpick (except for the tapped section in the middle), I actually come from a fingerstyle guitar background, so I really like to create a complete sound when I play. Check out some of my other videos, and you'll find a good variety of examples. I got to do some work last year with a bass and drums. I wasn't sure whether the bass would be too far below the dulcimer's range, but it really sounds great.

    • @ContemporaryDulcimer
      @ContemporaryDulcimer 3 місяці тому

      Jazz on dulcimer can be done in various ways. On a chromatic, lots of jazz chords are available. (You only need 3 notes to determine a chord.) I have solo arrangements of some jazz songs, in 1-5-8 tuning. However, I haven't gotten into the whole improvisational thing. Some people (Rob Brereton comes to mind) play jazz standards in 1-3-5 tuning.

      Kathleen - Thank you for that particular comment. Dulcimers have been mostly typecast into certain roles. I like to remind people that in 1900, guitars weren't much used in popular music (they couldn't be heard), and look what happened to them! Dulcimers are capable of incredible musical diversity, and they're much easier to learn than guitars. I believe there ought to be millions of kids begging their parents for a dulcimer for their next birthday. It may seem like a strange mission, but I believe it's good for the world.

    This brought back a childhood memory of hearing the music from the album Dark Side of the Moon through the bedroom wall all night long because one of my brothers had dropped acid yet again"..

    Great rendition, sounds pretty cool on dulcimer with or without the effects.

      Thanks, Mark! True, it would sound good on acoustic dulcimer, too, but with a title like that, and being a cover of a band that made an art form of big music, I just had to take it over the top. 😀

      Forgive my drummer ignorance, but were any pedals used here and there?@@ContemporaryDulcimer

      You bet! Thanks for asking. To quote from the video description, "The two pickups were sent to separate channels. Channel A went to my Headrush Pedalboard, running through a Gray Compressor, Parametric EQ, Octave, Rotary, Chorus, 65 Black SR amp model (based on a Fender Super Reverb "Blackface" amp), Dynamic Delay, and two layers of reverb. Channel B went through a volume pedal, an EHX Mel9 Mellotron emulator set on "High choir," and a bit of reverb at the amp." (I always go through the pedals in my video descriptions.)

      Thanks! I'm glad this bit of musical madness brightened your day. 😀 My goal in arranging a song is always to do justice to it and make it sound as if it was written for the instrument. And, maybe, to run with it as far as I can.
